Fiona’s love of nature and gardens evolved from her childhood, growing up with a mother and grandmother who were passionate gardeners. Spending holidays in the Blue Mountains and Mount Wilson (home to her grandmother) and experiencing the magnificent wilderness of the mountain bush. Bushwalking led to an understanding of natural ecosystems and developed understanding of sense of place. Visiting the historical gardens of Mt Wilson and the Blue Mountains revealed the rich cultural content of garden design and how it responded to the delicate mountain environment.

Fiona studied Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Urban Design and travelled throughout Europe and the US studying historic gardens. She has worked in private and public practice before establishing fionacoledesign in 1998. fionacoledesign is a sole practice where fiona creates beautiful gardens that express her understanding of natural systems and design sensibilities. She lives on the North Shore with her husband and three children where her own garden is set amongst beautiful gum trees and is an open palette for experimentation and continuing evolvement.
